"School" Cartoon Saint-Etienne: Marcinelle another?

Ecole Régionale des Beaux-Arts de Saint-Etienne , by its municipal status, was created in 1857 to train designers and meet the needs of manufacturers who care about the diversity of ornamental production . It is an institution of higher education under the tutelage of the Ministry pedagogical Culture.
If it is amongst the most renowned institutions of the hexagon is thanks not only to the quality of education it delivers in the arts, design and communication, but also to the International Design Biennial - the one of its kind in France.

In the 1970s, new options are created alongside the option of Art: "Communication and Environment. What has apparently attracted some young then, as Chantal Montellier, Jean-François Biard, Pika (Pierre Tranchand), Luc Cornillon Yves Barge, Jacques Terpant, Lax, Francis Vallés, or Nicole Claveloux (drawing ).... Youth

Ors, at the same time, born in 1974 just a magazine that would change everything and especially give a hell boost to these youngsters: Heavy Metal .

Yves Barge, born April 3, 1957 in Lyon, entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Saint-Etienne in 1975, where he creates with Luc Cornillon (also born in 57) its own fanzine Unit Value .
Dionnet Jean-Pierre, editor in chief Metal has noticed the work barge and Cornillon in Unit value, their order in 1978 a series of short stories for Metal Hurlan t Ah Nana! These pastiches of comics of the 50s are assembled in album Captivating. This will be the beginning of their glorious careers. Unfortunately for Barge, it is the victim of a car accident with her son in July 1990.

Terpant Jacques, born in 1957 also discovers a group of friends. He made his first album Branle for battle in 1982 with Luc Cornillon. His career continues in advertising and illustration. He recently left the series in September riders "Delcourt is a chart.

Serge Clerc , from Roanne, joined the band and will also career screaming Metal, Rock & Folk, Best ... and advertising, with its fine lines and angular, and very much in fashion time. A little "forgotten" in the year 90, he returned in 2000 but has not yet regained its past splendor.

Chantal Montellier becomes art teacher in high schools and colleges, while leading a creative individual. In 1972, she began to publish political cartoons. Many of his albums have been released by the publisher of Heavy Metal: Humanoids associated . It still publishes, in a field of political fiction still relevant.

Francis Vallès launches in comics in 1983 by publishing a survey hot for the magazine Triolo, while working for I Bouquine . It will be recognized nationally and adapted to the TV much later, for the design of the series of eight volumes of "Masters barley , "written by Jean Van Hamme.

This "school" was shown at a given time (years) 80 the breath of a new comic adult alternative, a little punk in spirit, but full of respect for his elders, traditional houses from Tintin and Spirou (The famous "clear line"). She has inspired followers, but some of the cult remains strong, as Yves Barge, one of the most talented and prolific of them, which an association that organizes and pays tribute each year for two years a meeting at Nerac, his hometown.

Today Saint Etienne nevertheless seems to find a true identity through the comic energy of the duo Deloupy of Aleppo and Jarjille editions, descendants of this friendly school. ( Read a previous article on the blog "1caseenmoins" )

Aliens
1: More Than Human
John Arcudi, Zach Howard ...

Sun May 2010 U.S. comics

The license Aliens Twentieth Century Fox has already been developed by us in the past by four publishing houses or collection: Zenda, Dark Horse France, the Bold and Weet . It still escapes
Panini and this time, Sun is a new label launched in March that it sticks.

collection "Sun comics Us" offers a small format card fairly well crafted, (106 pages, four color covers U.S.) and we have 9 volumes in total by the end of July.
will be available from other series Aliens: Aliens vs. Predator , is apparently a title previously published by Dark Horse in 1996 and 1998, and had not really caught the attention, and (Aliens) Predator . If the latter is the reissue title Bold published in 1999 and written by Chris Claremont, "Species meurtières", why not?

For that which interests us today, "More than human " is a novelty in four recently published comics in the U.S. (and version BPT). A more
Aliens? could be heard, as the license of HG Giger monster seems to be profitable, as in BD movies.
But the comic is a nice surprise since it offers a pretty good scenario (normal John Arcudi is a crack that has already bump on the creature) and the drawing is quite nice.
style Zach Howard is fluid and the inking of Mark Irvin leads a similarity with the design of a Cary Nord.

The story takes place on a planet where a patrol was dispatched to provide an update on a prospecting mining. The settlers on site, however, struggling with an alien artifact that takes possession of their minds.
Even if you are entitled to the usual scenes of battles between monsters and humans (but not only ..), the intelligence of the script lies in the prelude of the psychotropic effect of warming on the human race, where only fear of escape allows (...)
Using a cyborg character also brings its share of surprises.

The beautiful painted covers by Raymond Swanland added as an additional bonus to the first one shot as well.
A collection to be continued ...

American Splendor Anthology vol.1
Harvey Pekar and various
Here and there, in September 2009

I already had the opportunity to d other blogs to speak well of this series created by independent American Harvey Pekar in 1976. But it was U.S. collections.
Since the editions Here and there were good idea to translate the first 22 stories in French, combining in one volume the "American Splendor" No. 1-7, originally published between 1976 and 1982. Read

American Splendor (and in French, it is even more pervasive) is like taking a lesson, as recharge. Harvey Pekar
was great about it very early (an early?) Is to understand that he could express his thoughts through the comics medium.
The worst thing he did not even have to bother with drawing, he has found friends to put his thoughts into an image. What could be more cool?

Not only its small skits based on dialogues and reflections of every day between various protagonists take the road and evoke a lot of topics, but the graphics of most artists brings a definite plus to the whole, making American Splendor an example of literature (see chart).

Sometimes, as in this " Cold World" by Gerry Shamray , only two black and white silhouettes share their connection, the drive to secure greater attention to the dialogues. But whether using this aspect radical or using other graphic treatments, and without speaking of discoveries, each artist uncovers details, fixing attitudes, revealing a particular thought, allowing the attentive reader to take drawing lessons.

Cornelius should publish (from Here and there) in 2010-2011 collection of stories drawn by Robert Crumb , the underground cult artist of the hippie generation (now known as the French living in our south) which allowed Pekar to reveal his talent in the mid 70's but ... do not expect this book to dévouvrir American Splendor, especially after reading, and even as a fan of Crumb, they are ultimately not these pages will have learned the more my attention ..

Whether you're interested in the collection of vinyl records, jazz, politics (and anarchy: "Boston, November 1980), in married life (" The Day Before The Be-in ", or how After leaving his apartment at dawn to buy coffee and let her sleep well little woman, it comes back, but with a whole bunch of other stuff, because we crossed the meantime some friends in town and that we discussed the music ... and that confuses history with the return of press service and we write critical articles for a journal of jazz, ...); Human relations in general ... or philosophy, you will enjoy reading American Splendor.
